Ballyclare-based homebuilder Hagan Homes has officially kicked off its support of Action Cancer’s Builders’ Tea campaign by hosting a visit from an Action Cancer Skin Cancer Specialist Nurse, Iona McCormack, at its Springwater construction site in Ballyclare.
The event, which marks the first in a series of Builders’ Tea events planned across sponsor’s Hagan Homes’ sites in Northern Ireland, brought construction workers together for a tea break with a life-saving twist. The Action Cancer Specialist Nurse delivered an engaging talk focused on skin cancer awareness and prevention, highlighting the symptoms to watch for and the importance of wearing high-SPF sun protection while working outdoors.
With construction workers particularly vulnerable to skin cancer due to prolonged exposure to UV rays, the initiative aims to raise awareness as well as vital funds for Action Cancer’s Skin Cancer Detection Service—the only service of its kind in Northern Ireland offering free appointments to anyone aged 18 and over with a concerning mole or lesion.
Each site taking part receives a Builders’ Tea pack, including tea from local brand Thompson’s Punjana and biscuits kindly donated by SuperValu. The goal is to raise £5,000, enough to fund 40 potentially life-saving appointments.
Jim Burke, Managing Director of Hagan Homes, said:
“We’re proud to sponsor the Builders’ Tea campaign and to be the first site to roll out the initiative and to welcome Action Cancer’s Specialist Nurse to speak with our team. Our workers’ health and safety are paramount, and raising awareness about skin cancer could genuinely save lives. We hope other companies across the sector join us in this important initiative.”
Christopher Corbett, Action Cancer’s Corporate Fundraising Executive, added:
“We are delighted to have Hagan Homes leading the way. Their commitment to sponsoring this year’s campaign is helping us spread the message of skin cancer prevention and early detection even further and to those most at risk. These events are about making time for health, over a simple cup of tea.”
