Housing association Choice Housing has marked the end of their voluntary partnership with local charities Air Ambulance and Cancer Fund for Children with an amazing £8K fundraising total. Choice announced their partnership with the charities in 2022 and will split the total amount between the two organisations.

Each year, Choice staff nominate two local charities to support for one year, with the Fundraising Committee organising a busy calendar of events aimed at raising much-needed funds and involving staff teams in a range of initiatives.

Julie Dineen, Chair of Choice Fundraising Committee, said,

“With the ongoing cost of living crisis and the impact of the pandemic, local charities are struggling to maintain a range of their vital support services, relying more on fundraising efforts from individuals and businesses to help them sustain their support provision.

“We also recognise that families and individuals are equally struggling with the cost of living and there is less disposable income available that would normally go to things like donations to charities that are important to them.

“Our Fundraising Committee looked to organise engaging events and initiatives that encouraged donations whilst also creating experiences. Partnerships with charities is an important element of Choices’ commitment to supporting local communities across Northern Ireland.”

The charity Air Ambulance Northern Ireland, in partnership with the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, provides the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) for Northern Ireland.  The service brings urgent medical assistance to anywhere in the province, operating seven days a week for 12 hours per day. It can get to anywhere in Northern Ireland in approximately twenty-five minutes and since its inception in July 2017, the medical crew have been tasked 3,434 times.

The HEMS team attend patients who are seriously ill or injured, bringing emergency pre-hospital care direct to the casualty with the aim of saving lives, brains, and limbs. Air Ambulance NI aspires to raise £2.5 million each year to maintain and sustain this service and therefore public donations are crucial.

Grace Williams from Air Ambulance added,

“We are so grateful to the team at Choice for their incredible support throughout 2022. A lot of hard work and effort has gone into all of their fundraising, and we are so touched they chose to support us in this way.

“The funds raised will help the medical team lift off by helicopter to reach future patients, wherever that may be in Northern Ireland. This is very much a service that no one wishes to need but is there for every one of us.

“As a service we rely heavily on charitable donations to keep the medical team in the air, delivering critical care to patients who have suffered trauma throughout Northern Ireland – without this type of support, the team simply couldn’t fly. Every single penny counts.”

Cancer Fund for Children works to empower, connect, and strengthen children, young people and families impacted by cancer. They offer informal emotional, social, and therapeutic support in the home, on the hospital ward, and at Daisy Lodge – its therapeutic short break centre. Cancer Fund for Children supports over 1500 young people and 500 families every year.

Commenting on the fundraising effort from Choice, Jordana Stoney-Wilson from the charity said,

“Throughout the partnership, the team at Choice have gone above and beyond for Cancer Fund for Children. Thank you so much to all the team for their support in helping us ensure no child has to face cancer alone.”

Examples of some of the activity undertaken include raffles, pound for pound challenge, marathon relay teams, walk to work, cold water dips and a sunrise climb at Divis Mountain. Throughout the year, staff donate £2 per month in non-uniform money, raising over £2000.

FRASER MILLAR RELEASES NEXT PHASE IN UK’S LARGEST RESIDENTIAL PASSIVHAUS PROJECT

0

Leading property developer, Fraser Millar, will be releasing five new turnkey homes this week in the next phase of their flagship £70M Lancaster Park development – the largest certified developer-led Passivhaus residential project in the whole of the UK and Ireland.

The homes are all built to Passivhaus low energy building standards, helping to dramatically reduce home-heating bills for buyers whilst improving living standards. They consist of a range of three and four-bedroom, semi-detached and detached family homes, three of which have solar PV panels.

Launched in 2021, Lancaster Park will span a total of 219 houses across 26 acres and is the first large-scale residential development with an Energy Performance Certificate A Rating (EPC A), meaning optimum energy efficiency, unrivalled in any other development of its size in Northern Ireland. They all feature enhanced insulation and airtight sealing, alongside electric Nilan Compact P exhaust air source systems and can consume up to 90 per cent less energy than older buildings and 75 per cent less energy than the average new build.  The homes require almost no heating, no reliance on fossil fuels and will have cleaner air inside than out, thanks to a sophisticated built-in air filtration system. It is anticipated that all future properties will now have solar PV panels fitted as standard.

David Millar, Fraser Millar said: “As the world faces a very uncertain winter in terms of home-heating prices, these homes have been, and will continue to be hugely popular.

“One of the major benefits of a Passivhaus property is the rigorous design and construction practices developed by the Passivhaus Institute in Germany. Lancaster Park homes totally eradicate the reliance on fossil fuels, such as oil and gas,  for the home-owner and go a long way towards reaching net zero carbon building. The air-filtration system also means the air is purer and cleaner, helping to reduce the effects of allergies, asthma and other respiratory complaints.

“As a further commitment to setting the standards for greener and more economical living, all future Lancaster Park homes will be fitted with solar PV panels, which will significantly help our homeowners to counteract the effects of the recent energy price increases.

David continued: “We are proud to play a leading role in the future of home building in Northern Ireland.”

Located just 15 minutes from Belfast city centre, near the Saintfield Road, the next phase of Lancaster Park’s Passivhaus project go on sale this week.

Fontaine Fifth Wheel Returns to IAA with Safe Coupling Solutions

0

Fontaine Fifth Wheel are presenting their latest range of fifth wheel couplings at this year’s IAA show.

The company works at the forefront of haulage technology and their specialist experience, knowledge and expertise enables Fontaine Fifth Wheel to offer a broad range of technically tailored options, to meet exacting operator needs.

Fontaine says that on top of their world-class products, the company support customers just as well as they service their fleets, doing the right thing, in the right way, at the right time to build valued long-term partnerships that go the distance. Fontaine combine their fifth wheel expertise and service ethos to ensure that operator fleets will always be fit for the long haul, which, say the company, breaks new ground in safety, reliability and efficiency.

TechLock:  No contact – No couple

As the inventors of the world-renowned TechLock® system, Fontaine Fifth Wheel work at the forefront of automotive safety technology.

Specifically designed to reduce mis coupling, their patented TechLock® system’s jaw height sensor will not allow the fifth wheel to close if the kingpin enters at the incorrect height or position.

The fifth wheels profiled protective forging safeguards the TechLock® mechanism from damage due to high-coupling errors. 360° kingpin surface contact extends the life of the kingpin and fifth wheel mechanism. A TechLock demonstration video is available to view at the Fontaine stand.

3000 cast fifth wheel with single green LED, exhibited on lightweight direct mount chassis brackets

Another safety-first innovation from Fontaine is the 3000 cast fifth wheel with extended handle and single safety clip sensor. The safety clip sensor ensures that the safety clip has been attached – a critical check for any driver. Only when the safety clip is attached, the safety clip sensor shows a green LED light which is clearly visible from beside the trailer.

If the green LED light is NOT on, then the driver has not done his check and the safety clip has not been attached. The LED light is a second fail-safe and can be routinely checked by security before the vehicle departs.

Additionally, the extended handle, which houses the sensor and LED makes it easier for the driver to reach and operate the fifth wheel.

Key facts:

·        Available with a wide range of handle and mounting options to suit any application.

·        Comprehensive 3-year warranty (subject to terms and conditions).

150SP2 fifth wheel with 3 sensor green LED, exhibited on a 40mm mounting plate.

The pressed steel 150SP2 3 sensor uses a three-sensor safety system both to assist the driver during the coupling procedure and to alert the driver of mis-coupling or tampering: The fail-safe system continuously monitors the connection and alerts the driver from inside the cab, using warning lights and a buzzer if the coupling is incorrect.

As with the 3000, the 150SP2 3 sensor uses an extended handle to make driver access and fifth wheel operation easier. Plus, the 150SP2 does not require a wear-ring and thus reduces king pin wear.

Key facts:

·        Fit for… Flexible haulage volume carriers using two and three-axle tractors.

·        Standard Duty, 2″ on-road fifth wheel.

·        Features patented TechLock® system with integral kingpin height sensor which prevents false coupling.

·        Rated at 152kN D-Value and 20T imposed load (U).

·        Supplied pre-drilled to fit all OEM chassis – the standard and medium duty fixed mounting plate is suitable for use with all Fontaine 2″ fifth wheels with DIN6 feet.

·        Designed with Finite Element Analysis for low weight and high strength (combined weight of fifth wheel and mounting plate, from 160Kg).

·        Available with a wide range of handle and mounting options to suit any application.

·        Comprehensive 3-year warranty (subject to terms and conditions).

3-Sensor safety coupling system – Key Facts:

·        Suitable for all current 2” fifth wheels.

BELFAST HARBOUR WELCOMES PLANNING APPROVAL FOR NEW LOGISTICS HUB

0

Belfast Harbour has welcomed Belfast City Council’s decision to grant planning permission for a new high quality logistics warehouse facility located at Westbank Road on the Harbour Estate.

With sustainability at its core, the development of the new 50,000 sq ft warehouse represents an investment of £9m and will include provision of high efficiency chilled and ambient warehouse space with 17 loading docks, over 40 HGV parking spaces, and parking provision for both cars and bicycles.

The site on Westbank Road is in close proximity to the Port’s RoRo ferry terminals, providing unrivalled operational efficiencies for the occupier for freight travelling to and from GB and further afield.

The high-quality specification and occupier-led design of this new facility will allow for flexible use of the space, as well as energy and cost-efficient operations for users with the development being constructed to a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

With the volume of RoRo traffic moving through Belfast at an all-time high, the recent investments made by the Port in terminal infrastructure and StenaLine’s addition of new ships serving NI to GB routes, makes Belfast Harbour a compelling location for logistics operators. Opportunities exist for the development of further warehousing capacity in this location for operators seeking to leverage the competitive advantage of the location.

Michael Robinson, Port Director at Belfast Harbour said: “We are really pleased to see the new logistics warehouse receive planning permission as we believe the development will further cement Belfast Harbour’s place as NI’s key shipping and logistics hub.

“The decision to proceed with this project at the heart of the Port was driven by both an increase in customer demand, and the desire from logistics and supply chain businesses to improve connectivity and increase sustainability through reduced mileage. The warehouse will not only provide much needed new capacity in the sector but will also create jobs locally and support Belfast Harbour’s position as a world leading regional port and key economic hub for the region.”

The central location within Belfast Harbour, flexible leases and the connectivity of the location are key attractions and by putting sustainability to the fore of the development offers occupiers warehousing solutions that are net zero carbon ready.

Mates in Mind calls for companies and individuals to start the conversation about mental health this World Suicide Prevention Day.

0

September 10 marks World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) 2022, an annual awareness day created to establish worldwide commitment and action on suicide prevention. With over 6,221 suicides registered in the UK in 2020 alone and on average two construction workers taking their own lives every working day, it is vital we open up this conversation.

We believe breaking the silence and stigma surrounding mental ill-health is a crucial step towards providing a safe and healthy workplace environment, which can play a vital role in suicide prevention.

Michelle Wiles, Patron of Mates in Mind says: “This Suicide Prevention Day, it’s important to reiterate that early intervention is key regarding reducing the suicide rate within construction. It’s vital that individuals who are struggling with their mental health feel they are able to talk about how they are feeling and seek support before reaching that crisis point.

In 2019, my husband Chris suffered a mental health crisis brought on by severe stress, which developed at rapid speed and led to him taking his own life. No one should go through what Chris went through, and no family should go through what we have. Chris never experienced any mental health illness previously so I can’t emphasise enough that if it can happen to him it can happen to anyone.

Education on how to spot the signs that someone could be suffering from poor mental health and having the confidence to “start the conversation” is vital to breaking down the barriers that prevent individuals from reaching out to the available support. Mates in Mind helps everyone to understand their roles and responsibilities when it comes to mental wellbeing and importantly, their approach enables individuals to understand how, when and where they can get support.

No one should be afraid to ask or tell someone that they are struggling. Please do know that you can talk and there is someone there that understands your struggles, reach out to a manager or someone you trust if you are struggling, you are not a failure, there is always a solution”.

Research suggests that open and honest communication about mental ill-health supports steps towards suicide prevention, because these important conversations have the power to increase awareness and understanding, remind people they are not alone and help break the stigma which can be a barrier for those seeking help. In light of this, we are encouraging workplaces across the UK to use this opportunity to begin those vital discussions around mental health in an industry that is in need of change.

Sarah Meek, Managing Director of Mates in Mind says: “Opening up an honest conversation about mental health in the workplace continues to be the most immediate and effective starting point. We cannot underestimate this important first step – helping to provide clear language, create general awareness and supporting people to recognise that everyone has mental health which can vary depending on circumstances and life stresses. We cannot underestimate the impact that work related stress can have too and how a discussion with the line manager can often help and is not to be seen as a weakness or failure to cope.

Our experience in supporting over 650 organisations has shown us that the work we do at Mates in Mind can make a meaningful difference to the wellbeing of an organisation and its people. This awareness day provides an opportunity for workplaces and sites across the country to get involved, look out for your mates, and start a conversation which could in turn save a life”.

Rhino Wood comes to the UK market

0

International Timber, a leading importer and distributor of bespoke, sustainable timber and panel products, has announced stocks of a new FSC certified range of modified timber.

Rhino Wood, of which International Timber is the sole UK distributor, is manufactured from sustainable, plantation-grown pine. It undergoes a process of thermal modification which brings the moisture content down to below 5% and turns the pine from a yellow colour to a more aesthetically appealing walnut brown which will naturally weather to a beautiful silver-grey.

It is then pressure impregnated with a non-toxic compound which solidifies within the cells of the timber, creating a long-lasting low-maintenance timber which can rival the durability of traditional hardwood.

Their manufacturing process uses waste products as an energy source – using clean energy over fossil fuels. In recognition of their contribution to curbing deforestation, they received the WWF Climate Solver Award in 2014.

Kerry Wardle, Marketing Manager at International Timber, said: “We are delighted to be stocking Rhino Wood, with stocks due to arrive early in September. This timber is a game changer for the UK market which is struggling with global supply chain issues.

“Not only is Rhino Wood an environmentally responsible choice thanks to its sustainable sourcing, but it delivers when it comes to performance too. The impregnation treatment increases the strength of the pine timber by up to 60% without decreasing its bending ability or elasticity, resulting in a class 1 durability rating – making it ideal for endless applications such as cladding, decking, pergolas, gates and laminated beams.”

ULSTER UNIVERSITY’S ENHANCED BELFAST CAMPUS PREPARES TO WELCOME STUDENTS AND STAFF

0
A New Chapter - Belfast campus. (Photo: Nigel McDowell/Ulster University)

The final phase of Ulster University’s enhanced Belfast campus will open its doors to new and returning students and staff as the new academic year gets underway on 19 September.

Taking its architectural design inspiration from the shape of the surrounding Belfast hills, the new 75,000m2 addition to the campus is one of the largest higher education capital builds in Europe and is set to transform higher education in the city.

In September 2021, the university began to welcome staff and students to the first of the new blocks within this inspiring city centre space, following the launch of the first phase of the redevelopment which saw Ulster University’s founding art school and its historical, creative heart be the first to occupy the enhanced campus.

Regeneration and social impact

Ulster University plays a vital role in the economic development of local communities at campuses across Northern Ireland. The enhanced Belfast campus supports the ambitions for North Belfast as well as the wider city and region, with an estimated investment regeneration impact of circa £1.4bn.

Reflecting Ulster University’s commitment to social mobility, civic engagement, and shaping career potential, the equivalent of over 100 years of training, apprenticeships and placement opportunities have already been provided during the construction phase. Social clauses included in the contract as a condition of the build programme focused on supporting the long-term unemployed, student work placements, and apprenticeships in areas such as mechanical and electrical work, quantity surveying, procurement and supply chain management, accountancy, construction and administration.

Speaking ahead of the start of the academic year, Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Bartholomew said:

“Our new campus will foster creative talent, scientific expertise and enquiry, engineering innovation and entrepreneurial drive all under one roof, and marks a milestone for those who study with us, work with us and partner with us. It drives forward a reimagining of the teaching and learning experience that is deployed across all our campuses, including recent enhancements first introduced at Magee and Coleraine, accelerating innovation in how we do things and ensuring implementation of best practice.

“It’s a campus where our students will fulfil their potential and thrive, with the opportunity to learn and study in a style that suits them, supported by the very latest technology and facilities. It also offers our staff a quality and vibrant place to work, connected to the social, artistic, residential and business community in the area.

“Our campus was one of the few building projects to have remained operational throughout the COVID- 19 pandemic, underlining the tremendous, shared commitment to deliver this project for the incoming academic year. The Belfast campus development has been a huge team effort since its inception and never more so than in these last few months. I want to pay tribute to the dedication and effort of the architects, contractors, countless skilled craftspeople and tradespeople, and the very many colleagues who have worked tirelessly over the years to bring this transformational campus to fruition. Their collective vision, skill and effort are evident around us as we settle in over the weeks and months ahead.

“The campus will be a home not only to those staff and students who will work and study here, but also to colleagues from other campuses and our many external partners who will now bring to life this truly remarkable campus in the city centre.”

Powering Belfast Region City Deal

Reflecting Ulster University’s breadth of disciplines and academic leadership across the creative industries and digital healthcare, the campus underpins the university’s contribution to the Belfast Region City Deal. Both Studio Ulster and the Centre for Digital Healthcare Technology will see Ulster University apply its expertise to these sectors, boosting economic growth and prosperity.

Delivering community benefit and sustainability

For wider society, the city centre campus is also a welcoming environment where students, academics, business and local communities are connected to ever-expanding possibilities. The campus will make a lasting impact on the communities of neighbouring North Belfast, with the University actively involved in projects as a community partner and providing an accessible pathway into higher education.

The University’s Community Benefit Frameworkdeveloped jointly with Inner North Belfast and Greater Shankill Neighbourhood Renewal Partnerships, works with local communities to maximise the social, educational, environmental and economic benefits of the campus in the city.

Committed to encouraging use of public transport and promoting the benefits of walking and cycling for a healthy, active lifestyle, the university has worked closely with external partners on comprehensive sustainable travel options for the enhanced Belfast campus. This reflects the approach to sustainability across the new campus, from biodiversity rooftops to tree planting around the campus and from renewable technologies to energy efficient ventilation.

When the 2022/23 academic year starts this September, the new Belfast campus will welcome in total over 15,000 additional staff and students to the city, offering a progressive student experience benefitting from innovative learning spaces at the forefront of higher education practice.
