SIKA SUPPLIES MATERIALS AND TRAINING SUPPORT FOR UK PRISON ROOFING COURSES, HELPING TACKLE INDUSTRY SKILLS SHORTAGE

0

Sika’s UK Roofing Division has partnered with training provider GLA Group, which delivers prison education programmes across the UK, to help tackle the national construction skills shortage and provide the opportunity to individuals in prison the chance to develop meaningful flat roofing skills that can help them secure employment upon release.

The partnership began in April 2024, when Mark Harris, Head of Sustainability – Roofing at Sika, spotted a post on LinkedIn about GLA’s roofing training in prisons from Andy Bird, Director of the GLA Group. After recognising the shared values between GLA and Sika, specifically a commitment to social value and long-term community impact, Sika was inspired to support the initiative.

Initially launched by Andy Bird in 2017, the GLA Group training centre aimed to address the critical shortage of skilled roofers in the UK. After learning that two foremen within his own company had previously served time in prison, Andy saw the potential of offering structured training in prisons to provide opportunities for men who often struggle to secure employment upon release.

Sika’s involvement has been transformative for the programme, having supplied substantial volumes of single-ply and liquid applied roofing materials for free, as well as supporting the delivery of in-prison training at HMP Chelmsford and HMP Hollesley Bay, with discussions ongoing to extend the initiative to other prisons across the UK. Sika and the GLA Group has also welcomed trainers onto their own internal courses, ensuring that the tuition delivered in prisons mirrors the exact standard offered to their roofing contractor partners.

One recent project at HMP Hollesley Bay, a D Category open prison, saw learners replace a leaking felt roof on a disused shed, converting it into an “Art Shack” for music and creative activities. Sika provided all roofing materials and offered on-site support, with GLA Group supplying scaffolding and the prison contributing labour from men who had recently completed the single-ply roofing course. The project went on to be shortlisted for a 2025 SPRA (Single Ply Roofing Association) Award.

But Sika’s contribution doesn’t stop at materials. Sika now offers all prison course participants access to free roofing training courses upon release, as many times as they need. Once learners are deemed work-ready, Sika can also fund their NVQ Level 2 qualification in roofing and connect them to its national network of employers. In fact, one recent prison leaver, is already in full-time employment after completing the course and earning their qualifications through Sika’s support.

“This is more than just giving people skills, it’s giving them hope, structure, and a real second chance,” said Andy Bird. “With Sika on board, this has become a full-circle strategy. We’re not just teaching roofing; we’re helping men rebuild their lives.”

The initiative is accessible to men in prison with 12 weeks or less remaining in their sentence. Unlike many prison education programmes, the courses have no formal entry requirements, removing barriers for those with limited prior education. Practical and written assessments focus on real-world skills, including quoting, method statements, and safety procedures. Expansion plans include branching into women’s prisons and offering rooftop safety training that includes a five-year ladder safety certification.

Mark Harris and Mark Dunn, Head of Training – Roofing, from Sika were instrumental in developing the partnership, driven by a desire to give back to the industry and create tangible social value. Their belief in the project’s potential has helped shape it into a sustainable and scalable model.

“Supporting this training aligns with everything we stand for at Sika,” said Mark Dunn.. “It’s not just about tackling the skills gap; it’s about recognising potential and investing in people who are ready to make a change.”

NEW ADVANCED TRAINING FACILITY OPENS TO UPSKILL HVAC INDUSTRY AND BOOST TRAINING EXCELLENCE

0
Zehnder Training Academy opening by the Mayor of Surrey Heath, plus talks and a facility tour. Contact: Rachel Bowden rachel.bowden@361communications.com

A new education facility today opens its doors to advance skills and knowledge across the UK heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) industry.

The new cutting-edge Zehnder Academy, created by leading indoor climate solutions company Zehnder Group UK, aims to usher in a new chapter of industry-wide training excellence and to address the increasing skills gap in the HVAC sector – tackling the large number of poor installs currently being seen across the country.

Drawing inspiration from Zehnder’s illustrious 125-year history of innovation, the industry-leading facility, at Zehnder Group UK’s headquarters in Camberley, Surrey, has been meticulously designed to offer a flagship training experience at every level.

The new Academy contains a simulated indoor environment, in the form of a working apartment, with fully operational heating, cooling and ventilation units for testing and experimentation.

In addition, the Academy features a Posi-Joist ‘rig’ – designed with partner MiTek – for design, ducting and connector training. Also on display will be the latest examples of Zehnder’s innovative equipment for live demos and hands-on training in maintenance, servicing and commissioning, and a classroom-style learning space for lectures and visual learning. There will also be online training modules for extended theory.

The practical and academic training modules will span all elements of the Design, Install, Commissioning and Maintenance process, which tracks to the Future Homes Standard legislation coming into effect from December 2026. Equipping trainees with a gold standard of training across all four areas ensures HVAC systems are installed with a systems-first mindset to strike the balance between meeting the energy-efficient and air-tight requirements of the Future Homes Standard, while keeping indoor environments healthy and comfortable for their inhabitants.

Poor ventilation installations can have serious detrimental effects on a building’s fabric. They can cause condensation issues that can lead to toxic black mould, excessive use of energy that drives up the running costs of a building and, most alarmingly, pose a health risk for the occupants inside through poor indoor air quality – well known to affect wellbeing and lead to serious illnesses and respiratory diseases.

Zehnder Group UK Commercial Director, Stuart Smith, says: “while the UK boasts some of the best specialist mechanical and electrical (M&E) contractors, without a national qualification, there are simply not enough who are ventilation qualified and can do the job. This is resulting in uncompetitive quotes, shortcuts being taken, and a worryingly high number of poor installations being seen – and so the cycle continues.

“We know that in the UK there are still untrained tradespeople installing and commissioning ventilation systems with little or no knowledge. Once installed, many of these MVHR systems are left unmaintained and/or not serviced, leading to further issues down the line. That’s not a criticism. It’s a sign of a bigger problem – a systemic skills gap that’s holding our industry back. This investment by Zehnder is an effort to upskill our workforce and tackle the issue.”

From the outset, the new Zehnder Academy will be dedicated to delivering a modern approach to training and professional development to raise standards across the industry. Inside the facility, trainees will have access to live demonstration zones, a wide array of academic training modules, and interactive test environments to give them the practical, hands-on experience they need to excel throughout their careers – from apprentices and trainees to experienced contractors, installers and facilities teams that need to refresh their knowledge of technological advancements, servicing, and building regulation changes.

Ventilation systems have evolved into sophisticated pieces of technology, with digital controls, sensors, zoning, smart integration. They require careful design, expert installation and precise commissioning – and when it’s not done right, the consequences are serious. Smith adds, “we’re seeing tradespeople from all disciplines; plumbers, electricians, pipefitters, trying to install ventilation to save time or budget and it’s putting people’s lives at risk. It’s not through fault or laziness, but because there simply aren’t enough qualified ventilation specialists out there. That’s the cycle we need to break.”

Addressing this issue requires industry-wide collaboration, with high-quality, accessible training sitting at the forefront. Once the academy is in full swing, Zehnder’s ambition is to build up a nationwide network of Zehnder Approved Partners – engineers qualified to install and maintain its products to ensure higher quality, consistency, and confidence for its customers.

“We can’t wait for a national solution,” continues Smith. “The progress towards a national competency framework is slow and focused mainly on residential applications. That’s why we decided to take matters into our own hands.”

Zehnder says its Academy is a place where learning meets practice and where theory meets technology. A space that bridges the gap between product innovation and field expertise, ensuring that every installation delivers on performance, efficiency, and indoor climate comfort. Smith concludes, “The Zehnder Academy will turn knowledge into confidence, and confidence into competence, so that every system that is installed performs to its full potential.”

Looking ahead, the Zehnder Academy will shape the long-term future of the industry. By supporting the development of a highly skilled workforce and building a nationwide network of qualified partners, Zehnder is helping to ensure better outcomes for buildings, occupants, and the wider environment. It is an investment not just in today’s training needs, but in the quality, resilience, and success of the HVAC sector for years to come.

Recognised worldwide as a leader in indoor environment quality expertise, the opening of its UK Academy will further cement Zehnder’s role in helping to create a better and more sustainable HVAC industry across the globe. This facility is the 11th across Europe of its kind and Zehnder Group plans to launch more to establish a gold standard of training excellence globally, ensuring the future workforce are equipped with the skills they need not only to succeed, but to excel.

Industry professionals that want to sign up for courses at the Zehnder Academy can do so now using Zehnder’s Training Academy Portal. Visit Zehnder Academy | Zehnder Group UK Ltd for more information and booking.

Valpre Capital, Revelate Capital and a UBS-managed fund Sell Dublin Build-to-Rent Scheme Newmarket Square to MEAG

0

Valpre Capital, a London-based private equity real estate investment firm, together with Revelate Capital, an Irish-based real estate investment and development business and a UBS-managed fund, today announced the completion of the sale of 18 Newmarket Square, Dublin 8, to MEAG, the asset manager of Munich RE.

The transaction represents one of the most significant recent residential investment deals in Dublin and underlines continued confidence in the city’s rental housing market.

18 Newmarket Square is a landmark residential development in Dublin 8, comprising 134 high-quality build-to-rent apartments, a retail unit, 301 designated bicycle parking spaces, a co-working lounge, public amenities, a landscaped courtyard and 3 communal rooftop gardens designed to foster a dynamic community spirit. The scheme makes a meaningful contribution to addressing the Dublin’s acute housing shortage, delivering much-needed homes in a prime urban location.

The development occupies a prominent position on Newmarket Square in the Liberties, one of Dublin’s most vibrant and historic districts. Located at the heart of the Liberties, the scheme forms part of the wider regeneration of this rapidly evolving neighbourhood and benefits from strong connectivity to the city centre and key employment hubs.

Newmarket Square delivers a carefully considered mix of studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom homes, constructed to Nearly Zero Energy Building (NZEB) standards and targeting leading sustainability and digital connectivity credentials. The project was designed by Reddy Architecture + Urbanism, one of Ireland’s leading architectural practices, and constructed by Walls Construction, supporting local employment throughout the build phase. Financing was provided by Fairfield Real Estate Finance, backed by funds managed by Oaktree Capital.

The acquisition highlights Dublin’s continued attractiveness as a destination for long-term residential investment, driven by strong population growth, a growing workforce and a persistent undersupply of modern rental accommodation. Well-located, energy-efficient developments such as Newmarket Square remain in high demand among both renters and investors.

Sami Hakim, Partner at Valpre Capital, commented: “We are proud to complete the sale of Newmarket Square alongside our partners. This development delivers high-quality new rental homes in Dublin 8 and reflects the depth of demand for well-designed, sustainable housing in the capital. Our experience in Dublin continues to reinforce our long-term commitment to investing in the city’s living and mixed use sectors.”

Mark O’Brien, Founder & CEO of Revelate Capital, commented: “This is our second development in the Newmarket district following the Eight Building, and we are extremely proud to see Newmarket Square completed to such a high standard. The project reflects our commitment to thoughtful urban regeneration and to delivering homes that respond to Dublin’s evolving housing needs.”

FSi Promat launches new EN tested fire stop system for curtain walling facades

0

Passive fire protection specialist FSi Promat has launched a new slab edge fire stop system to protect buildings with a curtain walling facade from the rapid spread of fire.

The introduction of Paraflam Ultra expands the range of specialist fire stopping and cavity barriers manufactured by the company to protect the building envelope – covering a range of finishes from rainscreen applications to masonry.

A dry-fit slab edge fire stop, Paraflam Ultra is an A1-rated, non-combustible, flexible system that has been designed to address fire risks associated with curtain wall facades, namely preventing the spread of fire around the slab edge for a set period of time. This supports compartmentation systems in containing the spread of fire from one floor to another.

Paraflam Ultra provides up to 2 hours of fire protection for horizontal slab edges in curtain walling systems and is tested to the European standard for curtain walling systems   EN1364-4.

Importantly, testing has also included the need for movement accommodation, with Paraflam Ultra providing up to 6% of compression and expansion that’s essential to maintain the seal between the rigid materials of the slab and facade in tall buildings when they’re subjected to movement.

As a dry-fit design, the system is compression fitted to ensure compartmentation is reinstated at the slab edge to prevent the spread of fire, allowing occupants time to escape the building in the event of a fire, and fire fighters time to respond.

Liam Blears, National Commercial Manager for Facades at FSi Promat, said: “Curtain walling is an increasingly popular finish for tall buildings where effective passive fire protection is paramount – and, since façade design is often aesthetic-led, it is vital the fire protection systems used to protect it are kept front of mind during the design stage. Through creating a carefully engineered, movement accommodating system, FSi Promat is able to support with this.

“With FSi Promat’s commitment to competent technical support and efficient distribution, Paraflam Ultra can be confidently specified and supports ease of installation. It complements the range of cavity barriers FSi Promat already produce to provide fire protection for the building envelope; which now includes mixed façade and curtain wall finishes thanks to the introduction of Paraflam Ultra.

“Alongside the launch, we’re offering specification packs to support in the accurate design of passive fire protection at the earliest stages of a project to ensure best-practice and provide the level of detail needed for curtain wall or hybrid facades.  Plus, a range of training and extra supporting collateral is in development so watch this space”

FSi Promat already offers an extensive range of closed and open state cavity barriers for ventilated and non-ventilated facades, including its Silverliner range.

Specification packs are also available for rainscreen and masonry facades, offering fast access to the in-depth information needed to specify fire stopping & cavity barrier products and systems during the design stage of the building.

Tobermore launches Create & Construct hard landscaping support service

0

Tobermore, one of the UK & Ireland’s leading construction manufacturers, has launched Create & Construct, the most comprehensive hard landscaping support hub on the market.

The service is designed to give landscape architects, architects, civil engineers, local authority teams and groundworkers access to a comprehensive range of tools, services, resources and advice at every stage of their project.

“Our research has shown that 71% of hard landscaping specifiers use a design service on most of their projects, and they value being able to access the support they need quickly,” said Lisa Gow, Head of Specification at Tobermore. “We have designed the Create element of Create & Construct specifically to meet these needs by giving our customers instant access to a suite of free online tools and resources that help simplify the design and specification of hard landscaping projects.

“These online tools are supported by our design and technical teams, as well as our civil engineering partners, who are on hand to give tailored advice about how to address the specific challenges of each project.”

Create is suitable for use during the early concept, planning, detail design and specification stages of a project. It combines 15 different services to help users shape ideas, specify the correct products, and design sustainably.

These include Tobermore’s product design assets, which allow designers to select and download everything from seamless swatches and spec sheets to EPDs for multiple products at once.

This is complimented by Tobermore’s extensive inspiration gallery which shows products being used in public realm, heritage, education, housing and leisure settings, amongst others.  There are online tools to create mood boards, visuals and concept inspiration, as well as the option to arrange a Virtual Sample Studio session, which allows specifiers to view samples and speak to Tobermore’s expert team via video call.

They also have access to Tobermore’s 2D and 3D design services. The 2D service takes the design team’s plans and translates them into polished, project-ready drawings. The 3D design service enables specifiers to walk clients through project-specific CGI visuals that showcase the textures, patterns, and surfaces that define the design.

There’s also comprehensive technical support, including fully indemnified permeable paving design and retaining wall design.

“Sustainability continues to be an important factor on nearly every project,” added Lisa. “So, we have incorporated vital information such as environmental data, permeable paving design, and retaining wall advice into the Create element of Create & Construct.”

Create works in conjunction with Construct, which is designed to help contractors and installers take projects from tender through construction to post completion. It includes services to ensure construction and installation are correct, help solve technical challenges, and answer maintenance and care questions for the finished project

Create & Construct is quick and easy to use. Simply visit Create & Construct and move the slider to identify the services needed based on the stage of the project.
