From dig-in to wash-down

0

From groundwork to clean-up, there’s some great kit out there to cover every stage of the job. Darren Binns at Jefferson Tools picks out some top tools from the range that help landscapers work faster, neater and with fewer headaches.

Landscaping rarely means doing just one thing. In a single day, you might clear scrub, cut timber, set slabs and finish with a jet wash. The best tools will save time, reduce fatigue and help keep jobs on track, especially when the weather turns or the day’s schedule slips. Whether you’re building a patio, restoring a boundary or clearing overgrowth, your kit needs to match the pace and unpredictability of the job so it pays to review what’s in your van.

Breaking ground

At the start of many landscaping jobs lies a tough layer of compacted soil, rubble or tangled roots. Shovels are fine for topsoil, but breaking through the hard stuff needs serious force. That’s where a solid digging bar earns its place. Dual-ended models that offer both chisel and prying capability are perfect for post holes, root removal or prising out old concrete. Jefferson Tools’ 1500mm Bent Digging Bar is a great example. It’s powder-coated for weather resistance, has an angled chisel end and a square point end and is heavy enough to do the work without constant effort.

Clearing a site doesn’t always mean chainsaws and chipper vans. For trimming back and removing small trees or stripping roots, a balanced hatchet or axe is a reliable, low-tech solution. Tools forged in one piece reduce failure points and withstand repeated impact, especially on denser wood. The One Piece Forged Hatchet with its sharp blade and soft grip handle makes light work of clearing undergrowth and its compact size means it’s easy to store in the van. The Jefferson Tools’ Felling Axe is a powerful tool that cuts easily through large roots and branches, its shock absorbing fibreglass handle reducing fatigue over a long day.

A clean finish

Once the groundwork is cleared, accuracy takes over. Fencing, patios and decking all depend on tight measurements and perfect levels. It’s the kind of detail that defines a professional finish. Spirit levels in multiple sizes are essential, from mini box levels for tight spaces to longer models for fence runs or paving lines. Sets like Jefferson Tools’ 4 Piece Box Spirit Level Kit, which includes lengths from 200mm to 1800mm, are built for site life, with shock-absorbing ends and tough construction to withstand the knocks. Having a range of sizes to hand means you can check levels quickly and accurately, whether you’re working on close-up edging or setting long straight lines across a patio or fence boundary. They also come with handy hanging holes for quick storage in sheds and vans.

Laying slabs or decorative stone is a satisfying stage of any landscaping job – until the first chip or scuff ruins your hard work. Rubber mallets are the answer, giving just enough force to set material without damaging the finish. A white rubber head avoids leaving marks on light surfaces, while a fibreglass handle stands up to weather and repeated use. Jefferson Tools’ 2.0lb Mallet is designed with exactly this in mind, ideal for patios, garden steps or block paving.

No job’s complete until the mess is cleared and in landscaping that often means a lot of mud, moss and debris. Pressure washers make end-of-day clean-ups quicker, but they also bring value to drive cleaning, fence prep and decking maintenance. Petrol-powered models give freedom from mains power, with higher pressure suited to heavy-duty work. When you need portable high power, the 7.5HP Petrol Washer is a good choice as its turbo nozzle delivers up to 3600psi, effectively removing moss, mud or debris, but its frame is collapsible so it can be easily stored away. On smaller sites or where access to power is easier, the 2000w Electric Pressure Washer with its 150-bar output and steel-armoured hose delivers powerful cleaning in a more compact frame.

And of course, you need the essential PPE in your toolkit. From face shields for strimming and ear defenders to protect from noise to gloves that balance grip with dexterity, protective gear keeps jobs safe and comfortable. Jefferson Tools’ Orange Grip Gloves and Mesh Visor Shield are both good examples of job-ready PPE — breathable, durable and made for real work, not just ticking a box. Its Folding Ear Defenders have a high noise reduction rating (SNR 31.3dB) to keep hearing safe during prolonged use of machinery like strimmers, mowers, or chippers and the self-adjusting cups mean they stay secure and comfortable all day.

Every landscaping job is different, but the need for speed, accuracy and resilience is always the same. A van full of versatile, hardworking tools gives you the freedom to adapt as the day changes, whether you’re digging, setting, cutting or cleaning. Jefferson Tools’ range doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, but it does make sure you’ve got the right kit for whatever the site throws at you. Strip out the excess, double down on the essentials and your working day will go a lot smoother.

Recurring revenue: The future of security alarm installation

0

Richard Newey, Regional Sales Manager, HKC Security, discusses how cloud-connected alarm systems are transforming the traditional security installation model, and why recurring revenue is fast becoming the foundation for long-term business sustainability.

For decades, the security industry has operated on a transactional model: an installer fits the system, hands over control to the customer, and moves on to the next job. But with the rise of smart home technology, cloud platforms, and user expectations around ‘always-on’ support, that approach is no longer enough.

The role of the installer has shifted – they are now seen not just as engineers, but ongoing service providers who can provide maintenance after the installation is complete. This shift opens the door to a more stable, scalable way of working, incorporating service subscriptions to generate recurring revenue.

So, how can installers successfully transition to this model, what’s driving customer demand, and why is recurring revenue not just a commercial opportunity, but the future of the profession?

Recurring revenue

Recurring revenue has been adopted in many industries for some time. From home broadband and tv streaming services, to home automation and desktop software, subscription-based business models have become the norm.

For a monthly fee, customers receive a continuous maintenance service, app access, and installer support. The benefit to the provider is obvious: reliable, predictable income and stronger relationships with clients.

Although recurring revenue models are the default in other industries, adoption in the intruder alarm sector has not been widespread. But now, the same logic is being applied to security systems, and it’s changing the way many installers operate.

The cloud-connected advantage

One of the main drivers of this shift has been the evolution of cloud-connected alarm systems. Platforms such as SecureComm have created a permanent link between the installer, the system, and the homeowner or end-user.

This link provides more than just remote control, it enables diagnostics, alerts, event logs, firmware updates, and even proactive maintenance, all without the need for a site visit. From a technical perspective, it represents a significant advancement, while from a commercial standpoint, it fundamentally transforms the way security businesses operate.

These capabilities allow installers to transition from transactional businesses to service businesses. Instead of relying solely on the next job to bring in revenue, they can generate income month after month from systems they’ve already installed. This not only improves cash flow but also makes the business more stable and better able to handle quiet periods or changes in demand.

Subscription familiarity

The good news is that customers are increasingly open to this way of engaging with their home or business security. The subscription model has become a familiar and accepted part of modern life, with things such as broadband, TV streaming, and video doorbells.

With benefits such as app control, automatic updates, and peace of mind, many customers are happy to pay for a service plan that supports and enhances their system, but they aren’t always aware of the options available to them.

This is where installers have a vital role to play. By educating the customer and demonstrating the benefits of connected security, they can unlock new revenue streams while delivering a better user experience.

Mindset over marketing

It’s important to acknowledge that this shift also involves a cultural change within the industry. Many installers still hesitate to charge ongoing fees, worried that it might put customers off. But in practice, installers who understand and believe in the value they’re offering tend to have far more success presenting these options.

Simplicity also helps, and rather than offering overly complex tiers or bolt-ons, many successful businesses bundle their services into one or two clear, well-priced packages.

The services included can vary depending on the system and the user, but typically might cover app access, remote system health checks, cloud backup of event data, or annual support.

For some installers, it may make sense to include a full warranty or battery replacement schedule as part of a more premium package. The most important thing is that the offering is clear, useful, and justifiable from the customer’s point of view.

Creating lasting relationships

This new business model can also reshape the installer-customer relationship. Instead of a one-time transaction, the relationship becomes ongoing, dynamic, and service-led.

The installer isn’t just someone who turned up once and fitted a box on the wall – they’re now a trusted provider, a support contact, and a visible presence in the client’s day-to-day experience of their security system. In many cases, this has the added benefit of reducing complaints or call-backs, because issues can be addressed remotely and proactively.

This kind of model has the potential to significantly reshape the way installers operate. For example, a mid-sized firm choosing to include a basic monitoring and support package with every new installation, offered for a small monthly fee.

Over time, that could lead to a steady increase in service income, a reduction in unnecessary engineer call-outs, and an improvement in overall customer satisfaction, driven by faster response times and proactive system support.

Alternatively, installers might choose to revisit their legacy customer base with properties fitted with bell-only systems. By offering those customers a simple upgrade that enables app-based control and cloud connectivity, they could tap into a previously dormant market, turning past installations into new recurring revenue opportunities.

With the right messaging, such a campaign could become a valuable part of the business’s long-term growth strategy.

Getting started

There are, of course, some barriers. Setting up billing systems, managing subscriptions, and training staff to deliver support all take time and effort. But with the right tools and a manageable scope, these can be overcome.

Installers don’t need to build the perfect model on day one. They can start small – perhaps by offering a recurring service plan to new customers only – and build from there. Software platforms like GoCardless, cloud portals from alarm manufacturers, and job management tools all help streamline the process.

Another key factor is support from the manufacturers themselves. Technical training is essential, but installers also need help with commercial aspects: how to price their services, how to position them, and how to respond to customer questions. Ongoing support, responsive helplines, and real-world case studies all play a part in building confidence and competence.

A service-led future

Looking ahead, we see recurring revenue becoming a central part of the installer business model. It’s better for the installer, better for the customer, and better for the longevity of the business. In a sector that has traditionally relied on reactive work and hardware margins, the move to service-led income represents a much-needed evolution.

Security systems will always need physical components, expert installation, and a personal touch. But increasingly, the value lies in what happens after the install. Connectivity, convenience, control – these are the things customers care about. And they’re willing to pay for them, month after month, if it means they feel protected, informed, and supported.

For security installers wondering how to grow in a crowded and competitive market, the answer might not be to fit more alarms, but to build deeper, longer-lasting relationships with the ones they’ve already installed.

Silent Valley Closure – Monday 4th August 2025

0

With a Met Office yellow weather warning in place for Storm Floris, Silent Valley Mountain Park will be closed on Monday 4th August 2025.

The closure comes as the forecast predicts Storm Floris is set to bring “unseasonable strong winds” along with “heavy rain”. Northern Ireland set to be one of the worst hit areas, according to the Met Office.

The decision has been taken in the interest of public safety as some trees at Silent Valley were damaged following Storm Éowyn. While the park was partially reopened earlier this year, some walking and nature trails remain closed due to the damage. Repairs are ongoing, but it will take time to fully restore all areas.

A site inspection will take place on Tuesday to determine if it is safe to reopen.

Accident prevention charity issues safety advice as damaging winds expected from Storm Floris

0

Yellow warning issued:
Storm Floris will bring winds of 60–85 mph across northern UK, with expected disruption to power supplies, events and travel expected.

Be aware:
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is warning of the safety risks of unseasonable weather.

Stay safe:
Secure loose items, avoid travel, and prepare for possible outages.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has issued advice following a yellow weather warning for parts of the UK. Storm Floris is set to bring unusually strong and disruptive winds to northern parts of Britain from Monday into early Tuesday, where some inland gusts could reach 50–70 mph, with up to 85 mph possible along exposed Scottish coastlines, alongside heavy rain and travel disruption.

Adrian Simpson, Head of Policy at RoSPA, said:

“We understand how tempting it can be to stick with summer plans—whether it’s a coastal walk, a camping trip, or a garden gathering—but Storm Floris presents real risks. With strong winds and heavy rain forecast, we’re urging everyone to take the yellow warning seriously. Simple steps like securing outdoor items, avoiding unnecessary travel, and checking on vulnerable neighbours can make a big difference in staying safe.”

Here are some important safety tips to help you stay safe:

  • Secure loose objects: Ensure that any loose items outside your home, such as garden furniture, are secured or brought indoors to prevent them from being blown away.
  • Avoid travel: If possible, avoid traveling during the peak of the storm. If you must travel, check the weather forecast and road conditions before setting off.
  • Stay indoors: Stay inside during the storm, especially during the yellow warning period from 06:00 Monday to 06:00 Tuesday.
  • Prepare for power cuts: Have an emergency kit ready with essentials such as torches, batteries, and non-perishable food in case of power outages.
  • Stay away from windows: Keep away from windows and glass doors to avoid injury from flying debris.
  • Charge your devices: Ensure your mobile phone and other essential devices are fully charged.
  • Check on vulnerable neighbours: If it is safe to do so, ensure that they are secure and have everything they need.

For more detailed advice on staying safe during strong winds, you can visit the Met Office’s stay safe in storms page and the RoSPA website.

UNIQUE JCB POTHOLE PRO IS PATCH PERFECT FOR AJ BRETHERTON

0

A groundworks and plant hire specialist is bringing in new business thanks to the purchase of an innovative JCB Pothole Pro.

Purchased by Blackburn-based AJ Bretherton, the JCB Pothole Pro is being used to fix potholes on contract to Blackburn Borough Council as well as private work on local car parks.

The award-winning JCB Pothole Pro is a unique 3-in-1 solution specifically developed to mechanise pothole repairs and larger reinstatement operations. With dedicated attachments to cut, crop and clean, there’s no need for additional equipment or extra manpower – delivering significant time and cost savings.

The Pothole Pro can repair a pothole in less than eight minutes, four times quicker than standard methods and for half the cost of current solutions – at £30 compared to up to £60. A traditional pothole gang can fix around 10 potholes a day whereas the JCB Pothole Pro can fix more than 50 per day.

AJ Bretherton Owner, Alan Bretherton, said: “We like to support British manufacturing, which is one of the reasons we choose JCB. It’s also a comfort thing for us – the cab in a JCB is second to none. Our operators love them.

“When it comes to the JCB Pothole Pro, there’s simply nothing else like it on the market. For our type of work, it’s the only choice and is helping us land more contracts of this nature. It’s been brilliant for our surfacing work.”

Supplied by dealer Gunn JCB, AJ Bretherton’s new Pothole Pro joins an entirely JCB fleet including TM320s, a JCB 403 Plus, JS130 tracked excavators, a JCB compaction roller and two JCB Fastrac 4220s, which also support the company’s 350-acre beef and sheep farm.

Renfrewshire Council to deliver largest networked heat pump system to council housing in Scotland

0

Renfrewshire Council is to replace the gas supply in two of its council housing high-rise blocks with an innovative networked ground source heat pump solution, which will be the largest installation of its kind in Scotland.

Residents at the two multi-storey blocks in Gallowhill, Paisley will see their gas supply replaced with the renewable heating system, installed by contractor Kensa, which collects heat from underground pipes and transfers it to homes using an individual shoebox ground source heat pump providing reliable and efficient heating and hot water all year round.

The project is the first time a local authority in Scotland has delivered a solution of this nature and scale in its properties.

The flats at Gallowhill Court and Glencairn Court were selected as the gas pipework is nearing the end of its lifespan. A review of potential heating systems revealed ground source heat pumps to be the most cost effective and efficient system for tenants.

Work is set to start on site this month with the project expected to be completed by summer 2026.

In the long term, once the gas supply has been removed residents will no longer need to pay gas standing charges and heating costs will be included in their electricity usage which may help to simplify bills and potentially reduce overall costs.

Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Communities and Housing Policy Board, Cllr Marie McGurk said: “We want to make our homes as comfortable and efficient as possible for our tenants. By introducing the ground source heating solution in Gallowhill we will deliver a reliable and environmentally friendly system which will help to simplify our tenants’ energy bills.

“As a Council, we continue to consider climate change in every decision we take and we’re reducing our emissions wherever possible in the services we deliver – while continuing to access funding opportunities to make the large-scale changes we know are needed.”

Renfrewshire Council was awarded £1,788,382 of funding from the Scottish Government’s Scotland Heat Network Fund to support the delivery of the project.

Cabinet Secretary for Housing Màiri McAllan said: “I am very pleased that the Scottish Government has been able to support this project via Scotland’s Heat Network Fund.

“This is an excellent example of the growing role that heat networks have to play in Scotland, supporting our twin aims of delivering affordable heat and reducing fuel poverty whilst also cutting carbon emissions. We want to encourage greater use of heat networks and later this year we will set out measures to attract further investment by encouraging non-domestic and especially public buildings to connect to these schemes.”

Kensa, a pioneer of networked ground source heat pumps, have been appointed by the Council to carry out the works.

Mark Potter, Regional Manager for Scotland at Kensa, said: “We’re proud to be working with Renfrewshire Council on this landmark decarbonisation project. Networked heat pumps offer an effective, energy efficient solution to help flats transition away from gas and other inefficient heating systems. By connecting each flat to this system we’ll help residents stay warm and comfortable during winter, while keeping energy use and heating costs low.

“Kensa has a strong track record of delivering ground source heat pump systems for projects like this, and we look forward to seeing the long-term benefits it will provide for the Council, residents, and the wider community.”

This project is part of wider regeneration plans for Gallowhill which include the development of 65 new build council homes which will also feature low carbon air source heat pumps and a planned Gallowhill Link project which would provide a new active travel and safe route to the new Paisley Grammar School Community Campus currently under construction.

Late payment reforms offer hope for SMEs

0

The Government has unveiled its Small Business Plan aimed to support SMEs and unlock growth. This plan outlines their intention to tackle late payments, an issue which costs the UK economy £11bn a year and forces 38 businesses to shut down every day.

Richard Beresford, Chief Executive of the National Federation of Builders (NFB), said:

“As the Government has rightly recognised, SMEs employ 60% of the country’s workforce and generate £2.8 trillion in turnover. In construction, they train 8 in 10 construction apprentices. It is therefore promising to see the Prime Minister acknowledge the devastating implications late payments have on SMEs and the construction sector itself.

We cannot train enough skilled workers, drive business growth, retrofit our buildings, deliver infrastructure, and build 1.5 million homes in an environment where late payment and unfair terms are acceptable.”

Key announcements from the plan include:

  • New £4bn finance boost including 69,000 Start-Up Loans to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs and small business owners.
  • Plans to introduce the toughest laws on late payments in the G7.
  • New laws expected to give stronger powers to the Small Business Commissioner to empower them to wield fines, worth potentially millions of pounds, against the biggest firms who persistently choose to pay their suppliers late.
  • The Small Business Commissioner will be given new powers to carry out spot checks and enforce a 30-day invoice verification period to speed up resolutions to disputes.
  • The introduction of maximum payment terms of 60 days, reducing to 45 days, giving firms certainty they’ll be paid on time.
  • Audit committees, under the proposals, will also be legally required to scrutinise payment practices at board level, placing greater pressure on large firms to show they’re treating small suppliers fairly backed by mandatory interest charges for those who pay late.

The Department of Business and Trade (DBT) has published a public consultation to seek views on the proposed legislative measures which defines late payments as:

  • Late payments: Where business fail to pay on invoice within agreed payment terms (30 days where no specific terms have been agreed).
  • Long payment terms: Where payment terms are agreed over extended periods, beyond 60 days).
  • Disputed payments: Where businesses disagree over the goods or services supplied and payment is delayed or reduced.
  • Unfair practice around retention payments: Specific to the construction sector, where retained money can be lost through upstream insolvency or subject to late, partial, or non-payment.

Beresford added: “The use and structure of retentions have become increasingly problematic and so alongside late payment, the construction industry has a fantastic opportunity to expose how the supply chain is propping up bad practitioners. Seven years on from the fall of Carillion, we may finally see an end to these industry destroying practices.”

FIS launches ‘500 Word’ Sub-Contract to improve industry practices

0

The Finishes and Interiors Sector (FIS) has taken another step forward, as part of its ongoing campaign to tackle the growing complexity of construction contracts, by launching a groundbreaking Simplified Sub-Contract built on the ‘500 Word’ principle. This simplified contract is designed to cut through legal jargon, reduce disputes and promote better business relationships across the sector. This initiative forms a key part of FIS’s work to drive fairer procurement and smarter contractual practices through its Responsible No Campaign.

Developed in consultation with FIS members and aimed at fit-out and specialist contractors, the new sub-contract was developed by an FIS Working Group led by renowned contract specialist, Sarah Fox.  At the heart of Sarah’s philosophy is the belief that simplification works. By streamlining deals and clarifying terms, businesses can save time, build stronger relationships and avoid unnecessary conflict. The newly released contract embodies this principle and is now available to FIS members for free here.

Matt Hallam, Divisional Director at Telling Finishings and a participant in the initial development workshop, commented: “For years construction contracts have increased in both content and terms, often adding minor changes and clauses which continue to confuse, conflict and often compromise those required to sign them.”

“The need for a shorter and ultimately more simplified contract has never been greater and we at Telling Finishings look forward to rolling out the ‘500-word Contract’, to hopefully give both the comfort and clarity these contracts were originally built to achieve.”

To further support members and industry professionals in adopting this new approach, FIS will host a webinar with Sarah Fox on 25 September. Click the link to book your place:
Improving Business Relationships and Avoiding Disputes with Simplified Contracts. This session will provide practical insights on how to use the contract effectively and avoid disputes through simplification.

FIS is now encouraging all those involved in the industry to download the contract and register for the webinar to learn how simplification can help transform contractual relationships in this sector.
