Zehnder unveils Integrated Fire Safety Range for Residential Ventilation Systems

Leading indoor climate solutions manufacturerZehnder Group UK today announces its new fire rated product range with the launch of two new products to complement the existing Zehnder Fire Sleeves: Zehnder Luna Valve Fire Collars, and Zehnder Fire-Rated Airbrick and Ducting Kits.

Developed to enhance fire safety from the earliest stages of a project, the new range enables specifiers and installers to incorporate effective passive fire protection into residential ventilation systems as part of the design process.

As modern buildings become increasingly airtight and reliant on mechanical ventilation, ensuring ventilation systems do not compromise a building’s fire safety is a critical design consideration. Ductwork and service penetrations can create potential pathways for fire to spread if they are not adequately protected. Zehnder’s new fire rated product range is designed to address this challenge by helping maintain the integrity of fire rated walls and floors, ensuring ventilation systems perform their intended function without increasing the risk of fire spreading.

The collection includes:

Zehnder Fire Collars:

The Zehnder fire collars are designed to prevent the passage of fire through fire-rated compartment floors, featuring a stainless-steel shell containing graphite-based intumescent material which expands in response to heat, compressing the softened plastic duct to form an effective fire-resistant seal.

The difference lies in the fact that fire collars are designed for installation on the underside of floors to protect vertical duct penetrations, but Zehnder Fire Collars are available in five sizes to suit a range of vertical and ceiling-mounted applications. Providing up to four hours of fire resistance, they are suitable for integration into both new-build and retrofit projects.

Compatible with Zehnder’s Luna Valve, the Fire Collar helps maintain fire safety by sealing the ceiling termination opening to prevent the ventilation system from exacerbating the spread of fire. Fire collars are also available for the Zehnder Unity range of dMEV units.

Zehnder Fire Rated Airbrick and Ducting Kits:

The Zehnder Fire Rated Airbrick and Ducting Kits combine an A1 non-combustible external airbrick with a matched duct transition assembly to provide a robust, high-performance external wall termination for residential mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) systems. Available in five sizes, the range has been tested to achieve Euroclass A1 and A2-s1, d0 reaction-to-fire classifications, ensuring compliance with Building Regulations – Approved Document B (Fire Safety).

Designed for integration into external wall constructions for new builds or during major refurbishments, the system features an A1 non-combustible airbrick with an integrated picture-frame surround for accurate positioning and straightforward installation. A mechanically fixed mounting system ensures a secure, durable installation that maintains long-term performance throughout the building’s service life.

Each kit includes a duct transition assembly with a 600 mm duct section, available in multiple connection configurations, together with rectangular connectors for internal ductwork. The system is compatible with both rigid PVC and metal ducting, providing a reliable and compliant solution for external ventilation air intake and exhaust applications.

Zehnder Fire Sleeves:

Designed to protect ductwork passing through fire-rated compartment walls, Zehnder Fire Sleeves feature a continuous pressed steel casing containing a high-performance graphite-based intumescent material. In the event of a fire, the intumescent rapidly expands under heat to seal the duct opening, maintaining compartment integrity and preventing the passage of fire.

Available in cylindrical and rectangular formats across a range of sizes, Zehnder Fire Sleeves provide up to two hours’ fire resistance and are suitable for horizontal mounting. Designed for use in masonry walls and plasterboard partitions, including both insulated and non-insulated constructions, they can be incorporated at the design stage of new-build projects or retrofitted where required.

“Fire safety should be at the heart of every building design. One of our core responsibilities as a company is to protect occupant health, and that means ensuring every element of a building is designed with welfare in mind. Ventilation systems are effective because they improve the health and wellbeing of occupants. But in the event of a fire, an extra layer of protection needs to be in place to prevent the fire spreading, protect the building, and, most importantly, the people inside it,” said Rupert Kazlauciunas, Solution Management Lead, Zehnder Group UK.

Together, the Zehnder Fire Collars, Fire Sleeves, and Fire-Rated Airbrick and Ducting Kits provide a complete passive fire protection solution for residential ventilation systems. Designed to integrate seamlessly into both new-build and refurbishment projects, the range helps specifiers and installers meet fire safety requirements with confidence, while supporting healthier, safer buildings for occupants.
