Donaghadee Motte Reopens to the Public after £300K Investment

0
L-R: John Caldwell (Donaghadee Town Advisory Group); Stephen Reid (Chief Executive, Ards and North Down Borough Council); Councillor Mark Brooks (Mayor of Ards and North Down); Angela Lavin (Senior Investment Manger, National Lottery Heritage Fund); Adrian Kerr (Donaghadee Town Advisory Group)

Donaghadee Motte has reopened to the public at weekends, from May until September, following the restoration of the former Gunpowder Store.

Known locally as ‘The Moat’, the much-loved Donaghadee landmark has been conserved and restored under the Donaghadee Townscape Heritage Initiative, with funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and match-funding from Ards and North Down Borough Council.

It was originally constructed by the Anglo-Normans in the late 12th century. It was around 1821 that a picturesque castle was built on top of the Motte and used as a gunpowder store to store explosives during the building of the new harbour. The Motte is one of the largest in Ulster.

The Gunpowder Store is now home to the only accessible ‘camera obscura’ in the country, which means ‘dark room’ in Latin. It is an ancient optical device that lets light in through a small opening on one side and projects an image on the other. The camera obscura housed within the Gunpowder Store is fixed to the lower roof of the building and projects an image from the daylight through a 400mm wide upstand onto a table located inside.

The Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Mark Brooks, said:

“We are really excited to have reopened Donaghadee Motte and were delighted to see so many visitors during its opening weekend. The Motte is steeped in history and reflects the rich culture and heritage of the town. The project represents a considerable investment of more than £300k in Donaghadee and it is thanks to this investment that the future of this historical site has been secured for generations to come.”

Angela Lavin, Senior Investment Manager at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said:

“We are thrilled to support the preservation of Donaghadee Motte as part of a £1million investment in the townscape. Thanks to National Lottery players, this re-opening strengthens the community by helping local people better understand their heritage and history. Donaghadee is home to fascinating heritage and we know it is a great way of bringing people together and creating a sense of pride of place, that in turn can deliver wider economic benefits.”

Donaghadee Motte is open to the public every weekend from 10am – 4pm (closed for lunch from 12.30pm – 1.15pm), from May until September. Admission is free. A maximum number of six visitors are permitted at any one time. For more information, go to visitardsandnorthdown.com.

Work is well underway on the latest one million pound plus project for Topglass. The works at the New Children’s Hospital (NCH), Dublin is the most recent in a string of high profile, large scale undertakings for the Toomebridge based glazing specialist firm.

“We are delighted to be involved with the glazing works for the New Children’s Hospital which is being delivered by BAM Building.” Said Topglass Managing Director, Mark Mitchell, “The NCH Project is the most significant single capital investment project in the healthcare system undertaken in Ireland. It will bring together the services currently provided at three Dublin children’s hospitals into a modern, custom-designed, digital state of the art campus. Final phase of £18 million Wastewater Project for Ards North gets underway

0

NI Water has commenced extensive upgrade work at Ballywalter Wastewater Pumping Station (WwPS) this week, as part of its £18m Ards North Wastewater Improvement Project.

The pumping station, located at Fowler Way, will be equipped with modern pumps, state-of-the-art control panels and a new kiosk, as well as a new underground stormwater storage facility. The extensive improvements will improve the performance of the pumping station and provide environmental protection during heavy rainfall.

The essential work at Ballywalter WwPS marks the final phase of the two-year Ards North Wastewater Improvement Project, a major programme of work ongoing by NI Water to enhance water quality in the area through the rationalisation and upgrade of the wastewater collection, treatment and transfer systems serving the villages of Carrowdore, Ballywhiskin and Ballywalter.

Speaking about the project and this latest phase of works, Damien McKeown, NI Water Senior Project Manager said: “NI Water and our appointed local contractors, BSG and Farrans, are making huge strides on the wider Ards North Wastewater Improvement Project, with great progress being made on the construction of the new wastewater treatment works, pumping stations, pipelines and long sea outfall.

“The work at Ballywalter forms a critical part of the overall project to deliver widespread environmental improvements. We are pleased that these extensive upgrades are now underway with completion of the main construction works expected in summer 2022.

“For health and safety reasons, the area around the works site will have to be fenced off. Unfortunately, this will include the section of coastal path at Fowler Way, as well an adjacent area of residential parking. We would kindly ask pedestrians to divert off the coastal path at The Square and re-join the path if required further down Main Street. We would also be grateful if members of the public could refrain from parking at Fowler Way during the construction works. Residential parking spaces have been signposted and signage is also in place to direct pedestrians around the works area.

“As this essential wastewater improvement project at Fowler Way gets underway, I would like to take this opportunity to thank local residents for their support in the planning of the upgrade at Ballywalter WwPS. NI Water, our project managers from TetraTech and our contractors for this work, BSG, greatly appreciate the patience and cooperation of residents as we progress this essential £18m wastewater improvement project. We assure residents that every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum.”

Kingspan KoolDuct provides long-term air care

0

Over 15 years after it was first installed, The Kingspan KoolDuct System continues to support excellent HVAC system performance as part of the Sterile Services Unit (SSU) for the Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

The purpose-built facility handles all the sterilisation of medical and surgical equipment for the local NHS Trust facilities. As part of its construction, The Kingspan KoolDuct System was used to fabricate over 1,400 m2 of supply and extract air ducts to and from the HVAC air handling units. The system comprises foil-faced rigid insulation panels which can be used to fabricate lightweight runs of ductwork. Specifiers noted that the speed and ease of installation with KoolDuct, made possible through its pre-insulated design, was a key reason for its use on the project.

A recent inspection of the HVAC system showed that the ductwork is in excellent condition, with all joints and junctions continuing to provide an effective barrier against air loss. Ductwork fabricated from The Kingspan KoolDuct System has been shown to achieve air-leakage rates far lower than those of standard rectangular sheet metal ductwork. This allows the specification of smaller, more efficient fans and helps to reduce operational costs at the unit.

Cleanliness is clearly a key priority at the facility, and this includes maintaining a high standard of indoor air quality. Internal assessment of the ductwork showed that, thanks to a regular inspection and cleaning schedule operated by the NHS estates office, the ductwork remains clean and free from debris. The National Association of Air Duct Specialists UK (NAAD UK) recommends that ductwork fabricated from The Kingspan KoolDuct System should be cleaned using a mechanical rotary brush with plastic fibres (polypropylene is recommended) at a speed of up to 900 RPM. It is also recommended that a plastic ball is fitted to the end of the metal shaft.

The only significant change since the original installation was a new section of ductwork, which had been added to replace a section that had suffered accidental damage. Independent research from Rider Levett Bucknall has shown that the cost of maintaining ductwork fabricated from The Kingspan KoolDuct System can be up to 48% lower than for conventional sheet metal ducting lagged with mineral fibre insulation.

To support whole life assessments of ventilation systems, an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) has been created for The Kingspan KoolDuct System. This certificate can be downloaded from the Kingspan website and provides in-depth lifecycle information about the product.
