LEEDS BRADFORD AIRPORT TERMINAL EXTENSION SCORES FULL MARKS ON CCS AUDIT

0

Leading civil engineering and building contractor, Farrans Construction, has scored full marks in a recent Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) audit of its Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) site.

LBA is investing £100m into a vital regeneration of its terminal facilities, known as LBA: REGEN, to dramatically improve and enhance passenger experience. Farrans Construction has been appointed as the contractor to deliver Phase 1 of the project, the construction of the terminal extension.

LBA: REGEN will see a 9,500 sq. mt., three-storey extension to the existing terminal, alongside a significant refurbishment of the current terminal building. Passengers will benefit from more seating, faster security, new shops and eateries, as well as the creation of additional aircraft stands and a larger baggage reclaim area and immigration hall. There will also be improved access for passengers with restricted mobility.

Vincent Hodder, CEO of Leeds Bradford Airport, said:
LBA: REGEN gives us the infrastructure needed to deliver an outstanding customer experience, support the growth of our airline partners, enhance connectivity for business, investment and trade and provide the airport that Leeds, Bradford and Yorkshire have been waiting for.

“It’s fantastic to see our working collaboration with Farrans Construction being recognised as an example of industry best practice.”

Cathal Montague, Regional Director at Farrans Construction, said:
“This was the second visit from CCS and our site team delivered a presentation on our compliance with the scheme. The report that we received confirmed that all checklist items for 2024 had been achieved and that our social value and stakeholder engagement activity to promote the construction industry was excellent. A high focus has been given to EDI/FIR awareness and Mental Health with workshops delivered for both.

“Our site team was recognised for their focus on enhancing the natural environment to an excellent standard as well as delivering our carbon reduction strategy on site. Carbon targets are shared with the team alongside awareness around climate change and the journey to Net Zero. Numerous company initiatives are in place on our site to optimise the use of energy and resources such as a company-wide Recycle Week, campaigns to go plastic-free and work with local partnerships to donate laptops.”

Small Business Saturday is more than the high street

0

Celebrated on the first Saturday of December – this year falling on 7 December 2024 – ‘Small Business Saturday’ encourages people across the UK to shop locally and support high streets and local businesses.

Richard Beresford, Chief Executive of the National Federation of Builders (NFB), commented:

“The NFB wholeheartedly supports this campaign because local businesses are key to a strong national economy, and in the construction sector, this means builders’ merchants.

The value of these businesses was best demonstrated during the Covid-19 pandemic. When they closed for the first two weeks of lockdown, and despite being treated as key workers, the construction industry closed operations due to the lack of construction materials.

However, this example also highlights that while we should absolutely support retail-based local business, we must not overlook non-retail companies such as manufacturing and construction.

In construction, 8 in 10 apprentices are trained by SMEs, yet SMEs only build 9% of homes and face significant challenges with the procurement process, which favours big business that prefer a best-price subcontracting model. Is it any wonder we have a skills crisis?

On Small Business Saturday, broaden the conversation to include all the small businesses which create and sustain a healthy British economy, and construction is key to this.”

CDE Highlights the Opportunities for a Sustainable Aggregates Supply Chain in New ITN Business Programme

0

In association with the MPA, ITN Business highlights how the sector is striving for sustainability and driving the circular economy.

In association with the MPA, ITN Business highlights how the sector is striving for sustainability and driving the circular economy. CDE, a leading provider of wet processing solutions for the natural and waste recycling sectors, has teamed with ITN Business on its Responsible, Sustainable, Essential Minerals programme, which explores the role of the mineral industry in the journey towards net zero.

Launching today, Wednesday 4th December, the programme explores how organisations are prioritising sustainable practices across the industry, with CDE highlighting the importance of its solutions in transforming waste streams into in-spec sand and aggregates.

With sand being the second most consumed material in the world and increasing demand for sand and aggregates in construction projects across the globe, CDE’s solutions are supporting businesses in extracting value from waste streams and diverting more waste from landfill.

Commenting on the importance of highlighting the opportunities when it comes to adding value to waste materials, David Kinloch, Director of UK & Ireland, Middle East & Africa, and Australasia at CDE, said:

“It’s been a pleasure to work with ITN Business and the Mineral Products Association (MPA) on this programme, to showcase how our solutions are helping customers become more sustainable.

“For over thirty years, CDE has been offering innovative wet processing solutions to add value to construction waste materials so that they can be repurposed in the market. We’re currently focusing on three main areas to support our customers: tackling difficult waste streams to divert more from landfill, increasing the value of output products, and maximising yield of outputs from the waste resource.”

David continues,

“Each year we continue to contribute to the circular economy by engineering solutions across the world that are diverting over 30 million tonnes of construction, demolition, and excavation waste from landfill, building our best world a ton at a time.”

Featured in the programme is SRC Group, which has been working with CDE over the past twelve years to deliver twelve projects across the UK.

Oliver Rees, Managing Director at SRC Group, commented:

“Sustainability plays a huge role for us at SRC Group, with waste from projects through our construction, demolition, and quarrying businesses being recycled into high-end, valuable products.

“Thanks to CDE’s state-of-the-art solutions, we’ve been able to grow our business, operate in new locations, expand the lifespan of our quarries, and offer a sustainable option for local construction projects.”

The Malcolm Group, another partner of the Responsible, Sustainable, Essential Minerals programme, is extending the life of hard rock reserves by processing construction, demolition, and excavation waste into sustainable construction-grade outputs with a 150tph CDE wash plant in Scotland. They highlight how this focus on sustainability is diverting 500,000 tonnes of material from landfill each year.

The ITN Business programme is in association with MPA, a trade association formed in 2009 for UK mineral products operating companies across its 14 product groups.

JCB CHRISTMAS TOY APPEAL BREAKS RECORD WITH HAUL OF 1,700 GIFTS

0

JCB’s third annual Christmas Toy Appeal has delivered a record haul of gifts for distribution to children in Staffordshire and Wrexham.

Kind-hearted employees have donated more than 1,700 presents across all of JCB’s UK plants in Staffordshire, Derbyshire, and Wrexham – making it the biggest ever total since the first JCB Christmas Toy Appeal in 2022. The Hubb Foundation now has the mammoth task of wrapping the bulk of the gifts before the charity distributes them to families in Stoke-on-Trent with the help of the NSPCC. In Wrexham, toys donated by employees at JCB Transmissions will be handed to the Salvation Army for local distribution.

Today Lady Bamford thanked everyone for their contribution to the appeal. She said:
“I’d like to say a very big thank you to everyone who has taken the time to donate a gift to the JCB Christmas Toy Appeal. It really will make such a huge difference to every single child who has a present to open this Christmas.”

As the final gifts were delivered to the World HQ yesterday, Lord Bamford was joined by Rupert Chilman, aged five, and his sister Alice, two, to officially hand over the presents to the Hubb Foundation and the NSPCC.

NSPCC Strategic Services Manager Rachael Holdcroft said:
“The reality for many children and families is that Christmas isn’t actually a magical time. The donation of these gifts by the JCB workforce brings a little bit of light into what is otherwise quite a dark time for them and it will make the world of difference.”

Adam Yates, Chief Operating Officer at the Stoke-on-Trent-based Hubb Foundation, said:
“The sheer volume of gifts donated to the JCB Christmas Toy Appeal is an amazing achievement by JCB employees. I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has donated a gift this year.”

The GMB union in Staffordshire donated £1,000 to enable the purchase of toys for the Appeal, and in Wrexham, the GMB donated a further £650 so gifts could be bought.

PASSIVENT PLAYS ITS PART IN NEW PASSIVHAUS SCHOOL

0

Natural and hybrid ventilation solutions manufacturer Passivent has supplied its patented SoundScoop® acoustic cross-talk attenuators for use in a new purpose-built primary school in Wales. The school has been designed and constructed to meet Passivhaus standards and also achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating.

With a focus on sustainability and wellbeing, Ysgol Penbre (Pembrey School) near Llanelli was designed by Carmarthenshire County Council as part of its multi-million-pound Modernising Education Programme in collaboration with the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme. The school’s ventilation strategy has been enhanced through the use of Passivent’s versatile SoundScoop units, which have been installed within the classroom areas to contribute to a comfortable interior learning environment, both in terms of air quality and noise reduction.

At just 320mm high, the discrete design of Passivent’s SoundScoop allowed it to be easily accommodated within the bulkheads that supply the rooms with fresh air, which can also be heated or cooled, via a centralised air-handling plant. The SoundScoop units then passively exhaust air back out into the central circulation space for it to be extracted, tempered, and redistributed back into the classrooms by the main air-handling plant.

As the SoundScoop system is passive in operation, it requires no mains power supply or maintenance, making it a cost-effective solution for a busy school environment. It combines exceptional acoustic attenuation with very low airflow resistance, enabling cross-flow ventilation between internal spaces of a building. In the case of schools, this ensures compliance with both Building Bulletin 93 (acoustic design of schools) and Building Bulletin 101 (ventilation, thermal comfort, and indoor air quality in schools). SoundScoops can also be fitted with a fire damper (by others) in fire walls to satisfy fire regulations.

Providing technical support both at the design and installation stages, the Passivent team worked closely with project partners Bullock Consulting Ltd (Mechanical and Electrical Consultants), specialist contractor Narbeths Mechanical Services Ltd, and local contractor TRJ (Betws) Ltd.

Sian James from Bullock Consulting commented:

“The unique design of the SoundScoop cross-talk attenuator made it the perfect choice for attenuating noise between the classrooms and circulation spaces. As the SoundScoop is passive in operation and requires no energy to operate, this contributed greatly to the sustainability goals for the school.”

Water Upgrade at Glenhordial by Co. Tyrone Contractor

0

NI Water is pleased to announce the completion of an extensive programme of work at Glenhordial Water Treatment Works (WTW) outside Omagh. This upgrade will help safeguard the quality of drinking water for over 11,500 customers in the area. The contractor for this upgrade was Castlederg-based Lowry Building & Civil Engineering (LBCE).

The improvements were carried out as part of NI Water’s base maintenance programme, which involves an investment of around £10m every year to ensure the company’s 18 water treatment works continue to provide high-quality drinking water to customers across Northern Ireland.

Speaking about the improvements at Glenhordial, Zama Dilworth, NI Water Project Manager, said:
“The work at Glenhordial, carried out by Lowry Building & Civil Engineering and their Campsie-based mechanical/electrical partner LSR, involved the replacement of many key elements within the WTW, which were nearing the end of their useful lifespan.

“The work was carefully planned to ensure there were no disruptions to the water treatment process during any part of the upgrade. One of the most notable aspects of work – which took meticulous coordination – was the replacement of some of the tanks, which had to be craned in through sections of the roof.”

Commenting on NI Water’s wider base maintenance programme and the role it plays in safeguarding the provision of water and wastewater services, Zama said:
“NI Water’s base maintenance programme is an integral part of the company’s multi-million-pound capital delivery plan and involves the upkeep of water treatment works, wastewater treatment works, and pumping stations every single day. Coordination with our customer and operations colleagues to ensure that facilities operate as normal during any maintenance work is fundamental to the success of the programme.

“I’d like to pay tribute to LBCE and LSR, as well as our project management support team from TetraTech and SBE, for ensuring that the improvements at Glenhordial ran so smoothly.”

Glenhordial WTW Plant Manager, Andrew Porter, added:
“NI Water’s priority is the quality and safety of our customers’ drinking water. We are delighted with the programme of improvements carried out recently to ensure that the water leaving Glenhordial WTW continues to be of excellent quality for the 11,500 people around the Omagh area it serves. I’d like to thank our base maintenance colleagues and local contract team for the sensitive way that this work was completed.”

Lowry Building & Civil Engineering Project Manager, Jack Lowry, said:
“Lowry Building & Civil Engineering are delighted to play a key role in NI Water’s base maintenance contract, working to maintain both the water and wastewater network across Northern Ireland. We are very fortunate to have an experienced supply chain to help us deliver the best solutions for NI Water, and for the Glenhordial project, it was great to have the expertise of locally-based LSR on board.

“It has been a pleasure to work alongside NI Water, TetraTech, and SBE Design to provide improvements at Glenhordial Water Treatment Works and do our part as a company to ensure the local community continues to benefit from the efficient delivery of high-quality drinking water.”

Essential Repairs to Major Water Pipeline for Coleraine Complete – Ahead of Schedule

0

NI Water is pleased to announce the completion of a £220K programme of repair work on a section of a major water main, which delivers water from Ballinrees Water Treatment Works to approximately 19,000 homes in Portrush, Portstewart, and the wider Coleraine area. The original pipeline was installed in 1982 and required essential maintenance work.

The project involved the restoration of metal support brackets on a section of this watermain, which crosses the A29 Ring Road, Sandelford Bridge.

The repairs were identified as part of NI Water’s ongoing Infrastructure Appraisals Project, investing approximately £3.5m in an overall programme of work to assess the condition of critical infrastructure to ensure the long-term sustainability of these assets. The repair work involved treating the corroded brackets and replacement of all support fixings. These measures will significantly enhance the integrity and lifespan of the support system, safeguarding the water supply to the north coast region.

NI Water’s Senior Project Manager, Gary McFadden, said:
“NI Water is delighted to announce the completion of this significant programme of work, which will safeguard the water supply to the north coast region.
“In order to access the underside of the bridge, our contractor GRAHAM adopted a specialised underbridge inspection unit. This innovative equipment allowed the operatives to work safely from the bridge deck above, providing full access to the affected area without the need for riverbank access points.

“This inspection unit accelerated the delivery of the work and helped minimise disruption to traffic, resulting in the team completing the work ahead of schedule.
“Finally, the NI Water Project team would like to thank the public for their patience and cooperation throughout this major repair work, which will greatly benefit the water infrastructure in the area for many years to come.”

GRAHAM was the main contractor for the 8-week contract, while McAdam Design provided technical support for the project.

Rachel Reeves’ Budget Fails to Inspire Confidence in the Industry

0

Only 20% of construction professionals in the UK think that the Chancellor’s first Budget will ultimately be good for the industry, Gleeds’ latest Market Report has revealed. The firm’s 4Q 2024 survey found that 80% believe Rachel Reeves’ announcements will either have negative repercussions or make no difference to the sector overall, with almost 40% of the view that the Budget will result in a decline in investment in the UK property market.

According to the report, nearly 90% expect that the government will fail to fulfil the pledges it made at the end of October within stated timeframes – including promises on major infrastructure programmes and the delivery of 1.5 million new homes within this parliament. The findings mark a shift from the previous survey, in which around 70% of those questioned expressed confidence that construction and real estate was a priority for the Labour leadership and just under half said they thought it would be demonstrably better for the sector than the Conservatives.

Commenting on the latest findings, Chair of Gleeds, Richard Steer, said, “It has been an eventful year! Potential trade tariffs from the US and instability elsewhere has had a significant impact on investor confidence, which ranked as the number one threat to the industry in our 4Q survey.”

“Labour and skills shortages also continue to be a lingering concern in our market, particularly in light of a recent study which found that 68% of adults in the UK would avoid a career in construction – associating it with words like ‘dirty’, ‘strenuous’, and ‘boring’. With an estimated 937,000 new workers required by 2034, according to the UK Trade Skills index forecast, clearly this perception is something we urgently need to address,” he went on to add.

In addition to labour worries, the latest monthly figures from the Insolvency Service show that construction remains the worst-hit sector for liquidations, administrations, and company voluntary arrangements. Still, the collapse of ISG caught many off guard, with almost 60% of those quizzed by Gleeds claiming to have been surprised by news of the builder’s demise.

The consultancy’s survey shows a similar number expect to see further tier one contractors going into administration over the coming year, but, more positively, around a third believe ISG’s failure could lead to positive changes in the industry, such as improved margins and wider adoption of project bank accounts.
