LOW CARBON: New energy-efficient facility to meet accelerating demand for smart building components during energy transition
ABB has opened a new €20 million injection moulding manufacturing site at Evergem, near Ghent in Belgium, to meet the growing demand for safe, smart and sustainable electrification solutions in Europe.
The modern plant has been developed to meet the latest energy-efficiency demands through the installation of new injection moulding machines, digital technologies, and automation solutions. It replaces an existing facility that joined ABB as part of its acquisition of GE Industrial Solutions in 2018.
The site will produce power distribution enclosures which serve as protective housings for electrical distribution components such as circuit breakers, fuses, switches, and meters, ensuring the safe distribution, metering and control of electricity throughout residential, commercial and industrial buildings.
The global electrical enclosure market size is projected to grow from $7.42 billion in 2024 to $13.15 billion by 2032 due to increasing demand for new buildings, the modernisation of existing buildings with more efficient and reliable electrical systems, and advances in electrical distribution.
The new Evergem site is part of ABB’s Mission to Zero™ initiative towards significantly reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of ABB sites, while supporting customers to reduce their GHG emissions by providing a decarbonisation roadmap that they can implement.
NET ZERO: New injection molding manufacturing site in Belgium
The initiative is expected to reduce CO2e emissions by more than 6,700 tonnes and energy consumption by more than 9,400 MWh annually compared to 2019 at the previous facility. The measures are anticipated to result in approximately €2.5 million in energy cost reductions annually.
Equipped with energy-efficient machinery, it is expected that 10 percent of energy required at the site will be generated by 1,330 on-site rooftop solar panels, with the remaining sourced from certified green energy supplies. LED lighting, electric vehicle (EV) chargers, heat pumps, cooling water circuits and a new air ventilation plant are also contributing to the energy and carbon emissions reduction.
The Evergem site will continuously monitor and optimise energy usage, leveraging ABB’s own digital solutions such as ABB Ability™ Building Analyser which tracks buildings data and utilities in real-time and provides actionable insights to optimise energy efficiency.
This, coupled with the use of green energy and heat pumps, also facilitates the reduction in energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Additional digital technologies such as a building management system will be introduced in the coming months to further support the energy efficiency achievement.
“The Mission to Zero™ approach at Evergem is a significant example of our aim to enable a lower-carbon society and of our commitment to accelerating the transition to more sustainable manufacturing,” said Mike Mustapha, President of ABB Electrification’s Smart Buildings division.
“This advanced site is designed to fulfil future demand, not just current needs. Incorporating cutting-edge technologies and innovative processes that can optimise efficiency and productivity now and in years to come will provide a training ground and sustainability roadmap for our people and customers. We will continue to combine digital technologies with measures to reduce energy consumption and increase renewable energy sources at Evergem in 2024 and beyond.” he added.
To enable a low-carbon society, ABB is taking a rigorous science-based net-zero targets approach in line with the Net-Zero Standard of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). ABB partners with customers to avoid emissions and ramp up renewables. A scalable program, Mission to Zero™, covers energy generation, energy management and building automation for industrial and commercial operations.
HOT PROPERTY: Construction activity in Northern Ireland increased for the first time in two years
CONSTRUCTION activity in Northern Ireland increased for the first time in two years, albeit at a modest rate, according to the latest Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) construction monitor for Q1 2024.
A net balance of 4% of Northern Ireland respondents to the survey reported that overall construction workloads rose through the first quarter of 2024. This is the first time this figure has been in positive territory since this time two years ago.
Looking at the subsectors, surveyors reported that all private works saw increases with a net balance of 21% reporting a rise in private housing activity, 4% in private commercial and 19% in private industrials. Surveyors were not as upbeat about public sector activity, with a net balance of -6% noting a fall in infrastructure workloads, -32% in public works and public housing is said to have fallen flat.
Surveyors are more optimistic on the outlook though, with a net balance of 28% of NI respondents anticipating that overall workloads will rise over the next year. This is the highest this figure has been since pre-pandemic. It represents the first survey carried out since the return of the Northern Ireland Executive. And indeed, anecdotal evidence from respondents point to the restoration of Northern Ireland’s political institutions as a factor in the improved outlook.
Although workloads are expected to rise, surveyors in Northern Ireland do anticipate that profit margins will continue to be squeezed, albeit at a lesser rate than seen previously. A net balance of -6% of surveyors anticipate that profit margins will fall over the next 12-month period.
With the uptick in activity in some subsectors, NI respondents report ongoing shortages in skills across all sectors, wit further tightening in some areas. This quarter, surveyors reported increased shortages in quantity surveyors (61% up from 52%) and bricklayers (57% up from 46%). 48% of surveyors noted the continued shortage of other construction professionals which is the same figure as was seen late last year.
SURVEYORS ARE OPTIMISTIC: Jim Sammon, RICS NI Construction Spokesman
Jim Sammon, RICS NI Construction Spokesman, said: “We came into this year off the back of a turbulent 2023, so It is encouraging to see surveyors more optimistic about the year ahead. The construction industry is though continuing to navigate many challenges including skills shortages, ongoing high costs, and other economic issues which will continue to be acutely felt into the months ahead.”
“The return of the NI Executive is a welcome development which will enable decisions to be made that can positively impact our infrastructure and Northern Ireland’s journey to net zero. The recent budget highlighted the stark public spending environment, so it is clear that tough decisions will have to be made to support these urgent objectives. This includes the need to be decisive in relation to how revenue is raised and how spending is prioritised.”
Commenting on the UK picture, Simon Rubinsohn, Chief Economist at RICS, added: “The results of the Q1 RICS Construction Monitor suggest that activity in the industry more broadly is likely to start picking up as the year progresses although for the time being, it remains the infrastructure sector where sentiment remains most positive. The more upbeat expectations for the residential segment is particularly encouraging given the sharp fall in supply over the last year or so but, to put this in some context, the latest reading is not indicative of a return to even previous development numbers let alone reaching the goal of 300,000 units per annum.
“Although there is a little more optimism about a likely easing in credit conditions towards the back end of this year, financial constraints currently continue to be perceived as the major challenge facing the industry.
“Alongside this, securing planning is also seen as a key obstacle to getting on site while even with the relatively subdued trend in activity, difficulties in sourcing sufficient quantities of skilled labour are still being highlighted”.

POWER RANGER: The battery boasts a 5.6 MWh total capacity which helps to store surplus energy generated onsite from 24,000 solar panels.
GRAHAM has completed a £6.9m state-of-the-art battery energy storage system at Dunore Point Water Treatment Works (WTW), on behalf of long-standing client NI Water.
Construction commenced in February 2023, to deliver NI Water’s goals of reducing its carbon footprint after becoming one of the first public sector organisations to install a battery energy storage system.
The 4.1 MW battery is powered by an existing solar farm at one of NI Water’s largest water treatment plants, Dunore Point, Antrim.
The battery boasts a 5.6 MWh (megawatt hour) total capacity which helps to store surplus energy generated onsite from c.24,000 solar panels. During periods of low customer demand, NI Water can store this renewable energy to use later during peak times. The company can therefore power its operations at a lower cost and keep water flowing.
The battery also has flexibility to provide power back to the grid when required, to help support grid stability and provide greater resilience in the network to benefit NI society and economy. By generating its own renewable power, NI Water will reduce its costs and generate income from this installation.
PJ McCaffery, Contracts Director for GRAHAM said: “We are delighted to have delivered this project for our long-standing client NI Water, supporting their sustainable goals of becoming more energy efficient through innovative energy projects.
Working collaboratively with key stakeholders such as Arup, NI Water, NI Electricity Networks, and supply chain, including our civil designer Doran and specialist Scotts Electrical and Fluence was key to the project’s success.
DREAM TEAM: GRAHAM, NIW, Scotts Electrical Services and ARUP representatives
We aim to deliver a lasting impact on all our projects, by transforming and improving the built environment for the communities we serve. This project is a fantastic example of innovation and our expertise in the water sector, and we look forward to continuing our relationship with NI Water on future projects”.
Jo Aston, Chair at NI Water said, “NI Water’s Power of Water Report outlined practical examples of how NI Water planned to play a pivotal role in decarbonising our energy system. This Dunore Point project is just one of the many initiatives we committed to in this Report. It is great to see tangible results on the ground through the deployment of a state-of-the-art battery energy storage system.
“The large-scale battery will provide greater resilience for both NI Water and the wider network across Northern Ireland. It will store renewable energy generated onsite, avoiding peak tariffs, and enable more capacity for renewables to be connected to the grid. We will be able to provide electricity system services to the national grid operator which in turn has the potential to generate income for NI Water and help offset other costs.”
Pete Gray, Associate Director, Energy, Water & Resources at Arup, commented: “With sustainable development at the core of everything we do, Arup is delighted to have supported NI Water with this first large-scale battery system in collaboration with contractor GRAHAM, their supply chain including Scotts Electrical Services, Fluence, and stakeholders such as NIE-N and SONI, leveraging our energy specialists’ technical and economic modelling expertise.
